Our Mission:

The Many Hands Community is a dynamic not for profit organization. It is an intimate collaboration between local non-profit organizations, each with their own mission & brought together under a united goal. The Many Hands Community is a land stewardship program designed to rent out the land & facilities to interested parties & create revenue that will then support the Many Hands Community School. MHCS is a year-round program involving children, parents, & community members in education & multi-cultural programs, recreation, community improvement, & service activities.

Beginning Goal:

Establish a multi-service n-f-p organization that utilizes existing structures and resources, and develops community collaborations to enhance educational programming in Eugene. Incorporating elements of Social and Emotional Learning, Life-role Education and Community Awareness Education through Peace Village Curriculum, the traditional wisdom and the applied spirituality of the Native American Sacred Hoop teachings.

Long Term Goal:

Every child grows up with a sense of self and community and is given the tools to navigate both effectively with an understanding of the inter-relatedness to help them become whole and healthy human beings.

Our Partners

Peace Village creates educational settings in which individuals can discover their potential for personal peace and peacemaking. We promote the practice of nonviolence, the value of seeing ourselves in one another, and the importance of being a peaceful presence. We emphasize multi-cultural appreciation and the message of peace in each of the world’s religious traditions. Our goal is an ever widening village in whichmutual respect prevails, and conflicts are resolved through patient negotiation.

• Resource Development Many Hands Community is in the process of expanding its budget. Our resource development intern will work directly with the Executive Director and the board finance committee to plan and execute new and innovative ways to fundraise. This includes developing major gift donors, planning events, grant writing, mailings and unrelated business income. The ideal candidate will have some basic knowledge of nonprofit fundraising, marketing and business, excellent communication skills and a comfortable knowledge of MS Word, Access, and Excel. The first 6 months of this internship is not paid, however the opportunity exists for the successful intern to establish a salaried position with the organization. Practicum credits available; ask your university advisor or PV staff.
• Event Planning Many Hands Community currently utilizes 77 acres in the South Hills for educational facilities rented out to educational organizations and also to Public Event rental opportunities. The Event Planning intern will work with the Resource Development intern/ director and other staff, but will take a leadership role in scheduling, publicizing and coordinating one or both of these event channels. This position may count toward practicum credits; check with your advisor
• Grant Writing
• PR / Marketing Journalism, business or marketing students looking for workplace experience. We need articles written and published in trade journals, newspapers, magazines, video documentaries and photography
• Developing printed collateral / graphic design set for business cards, brochures, letterhead, and all other printed materials. We need a gifted graphic designer to help us create a corporate identity to complement our website.
• Volunteer Coordinator
• Program evaluations
• Webmaster preferably a CS or CIS major looking for work experience in managing a professional website. Our website is currently under reconstruction. A webmaster intern will work with staff and volunteers to update content, possibly to update the web design as well.

History

New Beginnings

An answer to a prayer. This year has been a profound testament to the power of community. This vision has been incubating and growing for nearly twenty three years.

Here is how it unfolded.

Years went into the understanding of the vision while developing personal skills, education, community connections and resources. The vision was continuously held up, nurtured and refined through guidance from the Elders and Native American Ceremony. Several years ago an alliance was formed when I met Darren Reiley, the Executive Director of Peace Village, and we realized that we shared a common vision. Since then our alliance and sense of brotherhood has only grown stronger.

The Land Base

In 2004, after searching for four years, off and on, the land on Butterfly Lane [77 acres of woodlands] presented itself and I jumped at the opportunity.

In 2005, I put in the utilities and roads necessary to make the land functional for or purpose and erected a 24’ yurt that would serve as a classroom when we were ready.

Communities in Action

In 2006, I sent out a request for the community at large to help develop the construction necessary to create some viable and necessary work and living areas. This distress call, since I was financially tapped and could go no further, also went out to a couple Native American Sundance communities.

People came with hammers, saws, prayers, rakes and shovels, including several from two different Sundance communities [Ochoco and Pilot Rock] and brought to life a new space that would serve as classroom, staff lounge, and offices. I remember fondly the loving help from the Stone River Community.

The Gathers Family Sundance held their annual Fall Gathering here and deepened the connections that much more to the mission here on the land.

This time was the birth of true community involvement on the land.
Since then we continue to run curriculum for youth and provide coming of age ceremonies here on the land; including cob construction, Community Service Projects and Rites of Passage.

Ceremonies and gatherings of all sorts are ongoing on the land with Native American sweatlodges being held three times monthly [Community Lodge, Men's lodge, and Women's lodge]
